1996 - Present: Public Servant to Private Citizen, Good Works Continued…
Andrew Young is an active businessman and humanitarian. It was in Thomasville that Andrew learned a major lesson about business. When the town expected a large Klan meeting, an appeal by black leaders to the two major employers resulted in their discouraging their workers from attending. "This was my first lesson, one which I would never forget, the influence of the business community on public affairs." His life's work has prepared him to continue his efforts to "level the playing field" for the world's poor. He envisions a world where security is available to all. Andrew lives his life with an abiding faith in human rights, democracy, and free enterprise.
He continues to practice the tenet of "doing good is good business" as Chairman of GoodWorks International, LLC, a consulting firm dealing with global policy and strategy for multi-national corporations and developing nations. Andrew serves on the United Nations Foundation, founded by Atlanta resident Ted Turner, which promotes partnership between the public and private sectors in order to raise funds and provide grants for UN initiatives. He also serves as a member of the board of directors for numerous businesses, including Delta Airlines, Argus Newspapers, American Market Center, Archer Daniels Midland Company, Cox Communications and Thomas Nelson Publishing.
It was a long, winding road that led from a country church to the United States Congress, to the United Nations, the Atlanta mayor's office and the 1996 Olympics, but it was essentially the same ministry - making the world more peaceful and creating more opportunities for the poor. Andrew Young continues to make his home in Atlanta where he lives with his wife Carolyn, whom he married in 1996. He has four children Andrea, Lisa, Paula and Andrew (Bo) Young III. He has five grandchildren. He presently serves on the team of pastors at First Congregational Church, a historic black church in downtown Atlanta, and as president of the National Council of Churches, USA.
