AYS Professor Bruce Kaufman Recognized with Alumni Distinguished Professor Award
Bruce Kaufman, Professor of Economics at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, has been awarded the Georgia State University Alumni Distinguished Professor Award. The award is presented by the University's Alumni Association each spring to one faculty member for outstanding achievements in scholarship, teaching and service.
Kaufman was hired by Georgia State University in 1977 and has served for 31 years as a member of the Economics Faculty here at GSU. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1983 and to Professor in 1989. During that time he has written or edited and published 14 books. Several have received critical acclaim or won awards. Most recently his book, Global Evolution of Industrial Relations, was selected by the American Library Association as “Best of the Best” for academic titles in 2004. In 1992 his book, Origins and Evolution of the Field of Industrial Relations, was the winner of the Richard A. Lester award for "Best Book in Labor Economics and Industrial Relations."
In addition to his 14 books, he has written and published 32 book chapters and 67articles in refereed academic journals. While Kaufman's work is most highly acclaimed in the field of Industrial Relations its span is much broader and includes economic theory, labor economics, human resource management, labor law, history of economic thought, history of management thought, institutional economics, and behavioral economics.
Kaufman is also renowned for his classroom instruction. Students seek out his courses, not only due to interest in the content, but also because of his reputation as a course instructor. He has distinguished himself by teaching effectiveness, classroom innovation, and high student demand for his classes, and thus was awarded the 2008 Andrew Young School Teaching Award. Additionally, Bruce is the author of one of the top undergraduate Labor Economics textbooks which is currently in its 7th edition.
