A Shorter Distance to your Criminal Justice degree.
Beginning in Fall 2011, the Department of Criminal Justice at Georgia State University will begin offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice at the Alpharetta campus. Students who complete their lower level requirements at GPC, GSU, or another college will be able to complete their upper level criminal justice requirements at GSU-Alpharetta. For students from GPC, the opportunity to take courses at Alpharetta will allow them to obtain a degree from a nationally-recognized department without having to drive to downtown Atlanta.
Curriculum
The Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal justice focuses on the study of the criminal justice system and its component parts, as well as the causes and consequences of crime. The degree program stresses an integrated view of the criminal justice system, highlighting relationships between system components in service provision and how the justice system influences/is influenced by other societal institutions. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a developing theoretical knowledge base in studies of crime and criminal justice, focusing on examining the system and its parts, as well as the roles of victims and offenders. The curriculum also is designed to provide students with a liberal arts education that focuses on basic skills, such as the abilities to read critically, write clearly, speak effectively, and think analytically. The curriculum is broadly structured to meet the academic needs of pre-professional students, those already employed in the wide range of agencies that comprise the criminal and juvenile justice systems, and those pursuing graduate education.
Scheduling
Courses will be offered so that students can complete the degree program within two years if they are attending full-time. Students are encouraged to register early to ensure that they are able to select courses that best fit their schedules.
Making a Difference
Our criminal justice curriculum balances theoretical and practical areas related to criminal justice and criminology. After completing required coursework in the major, all majors will complete an internship. Our department has developed relationships with more than one hundred agencies where our students serve as interns, and many of our graduates find employment in those same agencies. We are proud of the approximately 4,000 criminal justice majors who have graduated from Georgia State University since our program was created four decades ago. By selecting criminal justice at GSU, you will become a part of a long history of excellence that has come to define our graduates, students, faculty, community partners, and staff.
