NATIONAL EXCELLENCE

The Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University is ranked 5th in public finance and budgeting, 12th in city management/urban policy, 16th in public management administration, 21st in public policy analysis and 26th among the top 250 schools in public affairs by U.S. News and World Report’s 2005 rankings of graduate programs.

STUDENT BODY and DEGREE PROGRAMS

  • 4,500 students enrolled in courses
  • Two academic departments: The Department of Economics and The Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies
  • Offers joint Ph.D. in public policy with the Georgia Institute of Technology, the only program of its kind in the U.S.

SCHOLARSHIP, RESEARCH and GLOBAL ACTIVITIES

  • 58 faculty, 35 research associates; faculty and research associates have worked in over 30 countries
  • $42.9 million in 137 active external research funding grants through calendar year 2005
  • Republic of Jamaica just completed a $1 million tax reform project
  • Five research units: the Domestic Studies Program, the Fiscal Research Center, the Georgia Health Policy Center, the Experimental Economics Center and the International Studies Program
  • Other research centers: Program for Rehabilitation Leadership, Regional Atlanta Civic League, and the Neighborhood Collaborative
  • Provides consultation and ongoing research regarding educational reform, evaluation of the HOPE scholarship, public finance, Medicare reform, rural health care, child policy, the improvement of health care at the end of life, environmental quality, urban sprawl and water resources
  • Initiated the Partnership for a Smog Free Georgia (now called the Clean Air Campaign), designed to lower ozone levels in major metro areas
  • Operates the largest experimental economics laboratory in the Southeast
  • Provides consulting services for the U.S. Agency for International Development and the World Bank, among others
  • Continues work started by former President Jimmy Carter in integrating City of Atlanta’s disadvantaged programs
