Gurmu taught at the University of Virginia for six years before joining the faculty at Georgia State in 1998. His teaching and research interests are in econometric theory, applied econometrics, statistics and applied microeconomics. Gurmu's research focuses on count and duration models, nonlinear models, non-parametric methods, cross-section and panel data econometrics, health-care utilization, fertility, marriage, and transportation. He has published articles in the Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Business & Economic Statistics, Econometric Theory, Ethiopian Journal of Development Research and Journal of Applied Econometrics. He serves as a referee for numerous journals.
