Hotchkiss specializes in labor economics and applied econometrics. Her interests include the part-time employed, labor supply effects of state unemployment insurance formulas, constrained optimization of the full-time employed, employment opportunities of the urban poor, wage differentials across race and gender groups, and the labor market impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Hotchkiss has published articles in journals such as Review of Economics and Statistics, Economic Development and Cultural Change, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, International Economic Review, Journal of Risk and Insurance and Journal of Macroeconomics. She has co-authored the fifth edition of The Economics of Labor Markets, an undergraduate labor economics textbook. Hotchkiss also serves on the editorial board of the Eastern Economic Journal and has refereed articles for the Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Human Resources, Economic Development and Cultural Change, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Journal of Macroeconomics and International Economic Review. Her work has been funded by the Upjohn Institute for Employment Research, the University of Baltimore, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.
