Cathy Y. Liu’s research interests lie at the intersection of urban housing market and labor market, especially as pertinent to the socioeconomic mobility of minorities and immigrants. She addresses urban policy and community development issues in the context of changing urban spatial form, demographic dynamics and economic processes. Her recent works examine how residential location and segregation plays out in low-skilled immigrants’ employment outcomes and travel patterns, and the role of social networks in channeling immigrants from ethnic neighborhoods to ethnically-concentrated occupations. She is also interested in urban development in developing countries.

Dr. Liu received her Ph.D. from the School of Policy, Planning and Development at the University of Southern California, where she worked with the Lusk Center for Real Estate and Population Dynamics Research Group. She also holds an MPP from the University of Chicago. Her research can be found in Chicago Policy Review, Urban Studies, and Urban Policy and Research, and has been supported by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Haynes Foundation.
