Much of Ted Poister’s research is concerned with results oriented management strategies such as strategic planning and management, performance management, program evaluation, performance measurement, quality improvement methods, and customer credibility in government. Most of this work focuses on the adoption of these approaches, issues regarding their implementation, and their usefulness in helping public administrators manage agencies and programs more effectively.
Recent research efforts include a synthesis of strategic planning practices in state departments of transportation, conducted for the Transportation Research Board, and a set of field trials to identify thresholds of highway ride quality from the customer perspective, funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, in addition to an analysis of the role of expectations in influencing customer satisfaction with local government services. Currently Poister is leading an effort to develop a 360 degree assessment model by piloting a variety of stakeholder surveys for the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Ted Poister has published widely in such journals as Public Administration Review, Public Performance & Management Review, Public Works Management & Policy, and the Transportation Research Record. His most recent book is Measuring Performance in Government and Nonprofit Organizations, published in 2003 by Jossey-Bass Publishers.
