ECON 3610: The Economy of South AfricaThis course is a survey of the South African economy with an emphasis on current issues. The purpose of this course is to present students with a case study in economic development. The course will be presented in a sub-Saharan context. This is, concurrent developments in other parts of the African continent will also be investigated and analyzed. The course is divided into two parts. In the first part of the course much of the focus will be spent on providing students with economic and historical background. Economic theories on growth and development will also be presented. The second part of the course will emphasize critical areas of concern for the South African economy, including trade, foreign direct investment, land reform, unemployment, poverty, crime and the AIDS epidemic.
