ECON 8080: Economics of the Public SectorWhat should be the role of government in the economy? This issue has been debated by poets, philosophers, and politicians for centuries. Can this question be answered without an understanding of the effects of various government actions in the economy? ECON 8080 provides a set of tools from microeconomic theory that can be used to answer questions such as: What is the rationale for the federal government to provide national defense? For state and local governments, predominantly, to provide education? Other topics include the problem of externalities such as pollution, the regulation of monopolies, and income redistribution. The second half of the course uses microeconomic theory to analyze taxation, social choice, and government expenditure programs such as housing, education, and social-welfare programs. (3 credit hours) Prerequisite: Econ 2106 and PAUS 8141. SyllabiFor other syllabi, see the AYSPS Course Syllabi List . Please remember that individual faculty vary their course plans over time.
