PAUS 3111: Urban Political EconomyIn this course we will focus on both the economics and politics of the urban environment. Following a brief review of basic economic principles, students will explore the idea of human capital and how it shapes and constrains urban areas. We will use Nobel Prize Laureate Gary Becker's book to explore the notion of human capital as a primary economic force. Knowledge gained from this exploration will inform our reading of Clarence Stone's classic study of Atlanta, Regime Politics. Along the way, students will have ample opportunity to participate in both theoretical and practical discussions of human capital and urban political economy. Evaluation will be through examinations, participation and research oriented papers. This course is an examination of the intersection of the political and economic systems in the United States and how they impact urban areas. Of particular interest are the urban development policies. (3 credit hours) Prerequisite: PAUS 3011 SyllabiSee the AYSPS Course Syllabi List.
