PAUS 8281: Disaster Relief and Humanitarian AssistanceThe risk of natural and man-made disasters is growing with population increases and as development proceeds with little regard for known hazards. This course examines the roles of public, nonprofit, and private organizations, as well as individuals, in providing relief following major disasters. Particular attention will be paid to managing the consequences of major hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, and public health emergencies and anticipating the effects of less common hazards, such as terrorist events involving "weapons of mass destruction," asteroid strikes, volcanic eruptions, and structural collapses. Topics will range from the logistics of emergency assistance to the use of disaster insurance to encourage risk reduction and to speed recovery. The class will include videotapes of major disasters and guest speakers from public, nonprofit, and private organizations involved in disaster response and recovery.
