South Africa: Its Evolving Socio-Political Economy
(Actual trip is 2 weeks in South Africa, remaining time is at Georgia State University)
Sponsored by: Georgia State University, Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, and Morehouse College, Department of Economics, with assistance from the Georgia State Office of International Affairs, International Studies-Study Abroad
The joint Georgia State University / Morehouse College program of Economic Studies in South Africa is designed to give students a broad understanding of the workings of the South African economy, its infrastructure, its environment and its governance. Through a series of lectures, in country discussions with industry and public officials, and site visits, the program participants will examine the process of economic and social development, as well as South Africa's role in the global marketplace. In addition, the program will address South Africa's current socio-economic challenges, such as unemployment, poverty, crime and the AIDS epidemic.
The first week of the program will be in Atlanta. During this time, the program director will conduct lectures, providing the participants with a general overview of the South African economy. The following two weeks will be spent in South Africa. While in South Africa we will split the time between the Pretoria/Johannesburg area in Gauteng Province, the industrial center of the country, and the Cape Town area of the Western Cape. While in the Pretoria/Johannesburg area we tentatively plan to stay in student housing on the campus of the University of Pretoria. In Cape Town, we will stay in one of the city's high quality hotels.
This program is open to Georgia State University and Morehouse College students who have completed principles of macroeconomics (Econ 0201 at Morehouse, Econ 2105 at GSU). Students from other institutions are encouraged to apply with the consent of their academic advisor and their major department chair. Priority will be given to those students that register for the spring semester course, The Economy of South Africa (Econ 408 Special Topics in Economics at Morehouse College, Econ 3610 at GSU). Program size is limited, so participants are urged to apply early. Participation is contingent upon acceptance by the program directors.
Students who elect to take this program for three hours of credit must submit a research paper. GSU students are allowed to take this program for credit as an elective. Other students should check with their institution to see if credit will be granted.
Program cost may vary according to currency fluctuations and travel arrangements. Fees are tentatively set at $3,800. A limited number of partial scholarships may be available. *Please note the Early Bird Special under the Registration and Information section.
