Academics - Enrollment and Classroom Accomplishments
at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies

  • Nine percent increase in overall credit hours in AYSPS classes from spring 1999 to spring 2000; 8% increase in credit hours from fall 1999 to fall 2000.

  • The teaching of Principles of Economics to more than 4,140 students.

  • The offering of the most popular Perspectives course in the undergraduate curriculum fall semester, based on student enrollment: Cultural Perspectives-Global Cities.

  • The teaching of Perspectives courses to 723 undergraduate students this year: Cultural Perspectives courses included Global Cities (Dr. Harvey Newman) and Wrapped in Red Tape (Dr. Katherine Willoughby); Scientific Perspectives included Disease Prevention and Control (Dr. Paul Farham), Global Disasters (Dr. William Waugh) and The Global Economy (Dr. Neven Valev).

  • Participation as the lead unit for four Freshman Learning Communities: Leadership in the New Millennium (Dr. Bill Kahnweiler), Social Policy and Its Impact (Dr. Paul Farnham), Perspectives on Environmental Issues (Dr. Laura Taylor) and Mind Mapping Self, Systems and Worlds (Dr. Verna Willis).

  • Taught principles of economics classes to an advanced community for second year students.

  • Approval of two new graduate certificate programs, the Certificate in Disaster Management and Certificate in Planning and Economic Development, and completion of proposal for a Certificate in Nonprofit Management.

  • Approval of a new undergraduate Airline Management Certificate program.

  • The publication of new program brochures highlighting the B.S. in Urban Policy specialization in Aviation and Transportation, the B.S. in Urban Policy specialization in Public Policy, and the M.S. in Human Resource Development.

  • The publication of a new student Handbook for the M.S. in Human Resource Development program.

  • The offering of introductory courses in Urban Policy Studies, and specialization courses in Transportation Management, Airline Marketing and Public Relations, Airport Management, Operations and Planning, and Aviation and Transportation Law to students onsite at Delta University, the off-campus residence center approved at Hartsfield Airport Delta Air Lines.

  • Hosting of the fourth annual AYSPS Honors Day.

  • Participation in the development of the new combined 2000-2001 Graduate Catalog for Georgia State University.

  • Continuation of the Summer Policy Internship program, hosting 14 student interns from: Georgia Tech, GSU, Kansas State, Centre College (2), University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, George Washington University, Duke University, Smith College, Boston University, and Emory University (2).

  • Sponsorship of student and faculty participants in LeaderShape, an innovative, integrity-based leadership development workshop where students learned about leadership from a panel of community leaders and shaped their own projects to bring back to GSU.

  • Redesign of the Human Resources specialization in the B.S. in Urban Policy program and the development of new courses--Introduction to Human Resource Development, The Career Development Process, and Issues and Problems in Human Resource Management-to provide students better preparation in the dynamic field of HR.
