Journal Refereeing, Appointments, and Other Professional Activities
at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies

The College was active in the profession in 2000. We edited or co-edited four journals, and refereed for about 100 different journals. We served the profession with membership on numerous advisory and executive boards, and with peer reviewing of programs and faculty. We also served the public with numerous assignments on boards of directors and advisory councils to public and private agencies.

served as an external reviewer for promotion to the professorship rank of a faculty member at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

wrote an article on the role of transit technology for mobility of special population. The article appeared in the newsletter of the Greater Cities Universities, summer 2000.

Carol D. Hansen

served as a referee for the Human Resource Development International Journal, the Cutting Edge (best papers of the year, sponsored by the Academy of Human Resource Development and the American Society of Training and Development), the Academy of Human Resource Development Conference, and the Eastern Academy of Management Global Conference.

organized a panel on international Human Resources for the Eastern Academy of Management.

was invited to publish a summary of her research in international human resource development in the UNESCO Encyclopedia for Global Sustainable Development.

Amy Helling

is a member of the editorial board of Economic Development Quarterly. She served as a reviewer of proposals for funding submitted to the University of California Transportation Research Center; reviewer of paper proposals for the Transportation Research Board annual conference; and as referee for Environment and Planning B, Public Works Management and Policy, and the Journal of the American Planning Association.

was appointed to the Associated Collegiate Schools of Planning Committee on Reassessing Scholarship.

has been asked by North Carolina Gov. Jim Hunt to serve as technical advisor for "First In America by 2010," North Carolina's performance report aimed at moving that state to the top tier in education.

Bill Kahnweiler

was asked and agreed to serve on an international committee of the American Society for Training and Development. This group works to bridge the interests of human resource development researchers and practitioners.

was asked and agreed to serve as an expert reviewer for the American Society for Training and Development's Year 2000 Excellence in Practice Awards. He evaluated candidates in two categories -- career development and change management.

is Project Director of a training and development grant funded by Georgia Quick Start, a unit of the State of Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education. Additional funding received for 3rd year of operation in 2000.

Bruce Kaufman

is Co-editor of the annual research volume, Advances in Industrial and Labor Relations, JAI Press. He served as a member of the editorial boards for the Journal of Labor Research, Human Resource Management Review, and International Journal of Human Resource Management Education.

Susan Laury

Gregory B. Lewis

Verna J. Willis

serves as reviewer for monographs submitted to ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center), most recently for a monograph on experiential learning. She served as referee for the Human Resource Development Quarterly, The Organization Development Journal, and Proceedings of the Academy of Human Resource Development.

was quoted at length in a new Prentice-Hall publication from the UK. The quotation is presented as a highlighted section (pp. 64-65) with the subtitle "The Intellectual Roots of Human Resource Development'' in John Walton's 613-page text, Strategic Human Resource Development.

was quoted in a special report on the pioneering work of Reginald Revans, published in the November issue of the UK Training Journal, a Fenman publication.

is acknowledged as originator of the concept, title, and executive role of Chief Learning Officer a position now held by a growing number of human resource development executives, and is cited for her "early attempt [1991] to make organizational learning a top priority for corporate America" in the November issue of Online Learning. The magazine proposes and encourages innovative strategies for business.

serves as liason and coach for human resource development (HRD) graduate students who provide action learning opportunities for area business organizations. Three managers at Worldspan were voluntary action learning clients during spring semester, and these clients received formal consultant reports from the students during a culminating event at GSU in May.

attended the May dissertation defense of Robin Lackey at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. She was requested to serve on Dr. Lackey's committee as outside expert on Chief Learning Officers and their practices.

assisted organizers with marketing, conference registration, and the enlistment of student volunteers for the International Alliance for Learning, which convened in Atlanta in January 2000.

Katherine G. Willoughby

served as a referee for State and Local Government Review, American Review of Public Administration and Public Budgeting and Finance.
