The Fiscal Research Program
In May, the Fiscal Research Program, the Applied Research Program, and
the GSU College of Education sponsored a presentation by Dr. Henry Levin,
the William Heard Kilpatrick Professor of Economics and Education and
Director of the National Center for the Study of Privatization in Education
at Teacher's College, Columbia University. Dr. Levin spoke on the "New
Wave in Education Policy."
The Office of Community Outreach and Partnerships
continued in collaborative projects with the School of Social Work,
College of Health and Human Sciences, the Consortium on Negotiation and
Conflict Resolution, College of Law and the Office of Community Service
in locating placement sites for student service.
James Alm
was a member of the joint Department of Economics and Robinson College
of Business search committee for the Director of the Economic Forecasting
Center
travelled with Associate Provost Timothy Crimmins and several University
faculty to Utah for the American Academy of Higher Education (AAHE) Summer
Conference in July 2000.

and Jon Mansfield received an Instructional Improvement Grant
for their development of MBA 8403, "Economics for Managers," in Summer,

offered PERS 2002E, "Disease Prevention and Control," an Area B core
undergraduate course. This course gives the Andrew Young School of Policy
Studies a presence in the Area B undergraduate curriculum.
received a Faculty Development Grant for his Freshmen Learning Community
(FLC), "Social Policy and Its Impact," in Summer, 2000. He offered the
FLC in Fall, 2000 where he taught GSU 1010, "New Student Orientation,"
in collaboration with faculty and staff from across the university. The
PERS 2002E course, "Disease Prevention and Control," was also part of
this FLC. The following AYSPS faculty and staff participated in the FLC
as guest lecturers: Paula Stephan, Sue Fagan, Sally Wallace,
Ross Rubinstein, Laura Taylor, and Telesa Wilson.

Verna Willis

whose dissertation assesses university teaching strategies used to accommodate
the different learning styles and expectations of international students
at GSU.
developed and taught GSU 1010 "Systems, Self, and Mind-Mapping" Freshman
Learning Community during the fall semester. This required planning and
collaboration with other GSU instructors to offer a cluster of courses
which 25 freshmen completed as a cohort group. A summer planning grant
was provided specifically to cross-link the orientation course with the
Global Cities course taught by Dr. Harvey Newman. Freshman Learning Communities
are a strategy for retention of students, supported by the Provost's Office.
