Outreach - Research and Teaching Collaboration Within the University
at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies

Joint Appointments

Arthur Brooks is Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies and the Department of Economics.

Gary T. Henry is Professor in the Department of Public Administration and Urban Affairs, the Department of Political Science and the Department of Educational Policy Studies.

Melinda Pitts is Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics and the Department of Social Work in the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Ross Rubenstein is Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies, and Educational Policy Studies in the College of Education.

Benjamin Scafidi is Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics and the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies.

Other Activities

The Andrew Young School of Policy Studies

served as a sponsor of HR Atlanta, a publication of the W.T. Beebe Institute of Personnel and Employment Relations of the Robinson College of Business.

The Fiscal Research Program

In May, the Fiscal Research Program, the Applied Research Program, and the GSU College of Education sponsored a presentation by Dr. Henry Levin, the William Heard Kilpatrick Professor of Economics and Education and Director of the National Center for the Study of Privatization in Education at Teacher's College, Columbia University. Dr. Levin spoke on the "New Wave in Education Policy."

The Office of Community Outreach and Partnerships

continued in collaborative projects with the School of Social Work, College of Health and Human Sciences, the Consortium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, College of Law and the Office of Community Service in locating placement sites for student service.

James Alm

was a member of the joint Department of Economics and Robinson College of Business search committee for the Director of the Economic Forecasting Center

travelled with Associate Provost Timothy Crimmins and several University faculty to Utah for the American Academy of Higher Education (AAHE) Summer Conference in July 2000.

Arthur C. Brooks

served on the faculty of the Center for Educational Partnerships in Music at Georgia State University's College of Music.

presented the paper "The Arts and the Income Gap" to the students and faculty of GSU's School of Music on January 15, 2000.

Linda Calloway

collaborated with the School of Social Work to develop a joint service learning policy manual and materials and developed the paper, "A Model for Internal University Collaborations."

Linda Calloway received The Community Leadership Award presented by the School of Social Work, College of Health and Human Sciences, 2000.

James P. Cooney, Jr.

taught Health Policy and Ethics for the Institute for Health Administration, Robinson College of Business Administration.

Paul G. Farnham

and Jon Mansfield received an Instructional Improvement Grant for their development of MBA 8403, "Economics for Managers," in Summer, 2000.

offered PERS 2002E, "Disease Prevention and Control," an Area B core undergraduate course. This course gives the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies a presence in the Area B undergraduate curriculum.

received a Faculty Development Grant for his Freshmen Learning Community (FLC), "Social Policy and Its Impact," in Summer, 2000. He offered the FLC in Fall, 2000 where he taught GSU 1010, "New Student Orientation," in collaboration with faculty and staff from across the university. The PERS 2002E course, "Disease Prevention and Control," was also part of this FLC. The following AYSPS faculty and staff participated in the FLC as guest lecturers: Paula Stephan, Sue Fagan, Sally Wallace, Ross Rubinstein, Laura Taylor, and Telesa Wilson. Farnham worked with the instructors of ENGL 1101, "English Composition I," SOCI 1160, "Social Problems," and BIOL 2300, "Microbiology and Public Health," to coordinate topics among the FLC courses.

taught HA 8250, "Health Economics and Financing," for the Institute of Health Administration's Master of Health Administration Program and EMBA 8400, "Managerial Economics," for the Executive MBA Program in the Robinson College of Business.

served as a joint faculty member of the Institute of Health Administration and a member of the Executive MBA faculty in the Robinson College of Business.

served as AYSPS representative on the Advisory Committee for the University Center for Teaching and Learning.

Atef Ghobrial

was appointed as Associate in the Center for Business and Industrial Marketing, Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University. There he represented AYSPS in developing a joint Certificate in Transportation and Logistics.

serves on doctoral thesis Committees in the College of Education.

Carol D. Hansen

co-authored an article with Shaker Zahra in the Department of Management, and held a joint appointment in the Department of Management.

served on the doctoral exam committee for Wes McCoy, in the College of Education's Department of Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology.

co-directed a USIA grant with Dean Karen Schultz of the College of Education to develop research and curriculum linkages in the Cote d'Ivoire (final year).

Bruce Kaufman

served as member of the GSU Human Resource Executive Roundtable.

hosted an at home evening social event for Joint US-Egypt MBA students.

Harvey K. Newman

offered a section of Perspectives 2001, Global Cities in Cross Cultural Perspective, for the University's Honor's Program and two sections of the course for the Fall 2000 Freshmen Learning Communities.

advised all new undecided or undeclared Urban Governance and Gerontology students.

Lloyd G. Nigro

served on the dissertation committees of three doctoral students who graduated from the Department of Political Science: Christine Cagle ("A Case Study of the Political Struggle Between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Rifle Association Over Policy Research Related to Firearm Violence,"), Rick Charles, ("Safety-Related Decision-Making in the FAA: An Analysis Based on Herbert Simon's Administrative Behavior,"), and Frankie McIntosh, ("A Comparative Study of Selected State Lotteries: An Examination of Effectiveness, Efficiency, and Supplantation of Revenues.")

, Gary Henry, Theodore Poister, Michael Foster, and, from the Department of Criminal Justice, Sarah Eschholz, met with Frank Berry and Art Sands from the Department of Juvenile Justice on May 18, 2000 to discuss working with DJJ, the Casey Foundation, and Woodruff Foundation regarding Alternative Detention Reform Initiatives.

William L. Waugh, Jr.

worked on a collaborative project with Fran Norris, GSU Psychology Department, and Jasmin Riad, Disaster Research Center, University of Delaware, on the psychology of evacuation and its implications for public policy.

worked with Damon Camp, GSU Criminal Justice Department, on a Department of Justice research proposal.

served on the dissertation committees for Percy Mack (defended spring 2000), and Pamela Sams in Educational Policy Studies, and for George Meals, Richard Charles, Frankie McIntosh, and Dana Rickman, in Political Science.

Verna Willis

served as qualitative methodologist for the dissertation of Andrew Smith of the Department of Middle Secondary Education and Instructional Technology, whose dissertation assesses university teaching strategies used to accommodate the different learning styles and expectations of international students at GSU.

developed and taught GSU 1010 "Systems, Self, and Mind-Mapping" Freshman Learning Community during the fall semester. This required planning and collaboration with other GSU instructors to offer a cluster of courses which 25 freshmen completed as a cohort group. A summer planning grant was provided specifically to cross-link the orientation course with the Global Cities course taught by Dr. Harvey Newman. Freshman Learning Communities are a strategy for retention of students, supported by the Provost's Office.

Katherine Willoughby

and Gregory Streib prepared and taught the new perspectives course, Pers2001Y: Wrapped in Red Tape? The Relationship Between Citizens and Government in Developed and Emerging Governments, accepted Spring 2000; taught for the first time Fall 2000.

served as Chair of the Dissertation Committee of Laura Tucker in the Department of Political Science.
