at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies

James Alm

chaired the Department of Economics health economist search committee; chaired the Department of Economics nonprofit economist search committee; served as member of the Department of Economics urban/regional economist search committee; served as member of the Department of Economics self-study committee; served as member of the joint Department of Economics and PAUS search committee for the Chair of the Department of PAUS; chaired the AYSPS committee to prepare the "Public Finance and Budget" section of The Briefing for Summer 2000; and sat on the University committee to allocate QIF monies. He served on dissertation/thesis committees for Stephanie Zobay, Mikhail Melnick, Douglas Campbell, Veronica Mafoko, and Jason Calder.

Jay Bae

served as an academic program committee member for developing a doctoral program of Health Policy at GSU and served on the Economics faculty search committee for a welfare and poverty position. He organized the Economics Department's Graduate Students Welcome Event in September, and served as guest lecturer on Pharmaceutical Industry and Policy for the PAUS graduate course, "Applying Research to Policy Making: Examples from Health Care Policy," November, 2000.

Roy Bahl

served on the GSU Research Foundation Board of Directors. He co-chaired the dissertation committees for Stephanie Zobay, and served as a member of the dissertation committees for Barbara Edwards, Robert McNab and Baoyun Qiao.

Jameson Boex

served as examiner for the dissertation proposal defense of Agnes Bielinska-Kwapisz, and served on the college Web Oversight Committee.

Arthur Brooks

is coordinating the Nonprofit Executive Research Group for AYSPS, with Mike Mescon; served on the Steering Committee for the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies; and served on the Nonprofit Advisory Committee for GSU.

Rick Charles

completed development of an Undergraduate Certificate in Airline Management, which is now offered by the University, and an aviation career track in the MPA program, which will be included in the next edition of the graduate catalog. He represented GSU in the annual Delta Air Lines Benefits Fair, September 2000.

Kelly Edmiston

Kelly Edmiston served on the Admissions and Coordination Committee for the joint Ph.D. Public Policy Program, the Graduate Committee for the Department of Economics, the Economics Internal Evaluation Committee, the Regional (1999-2000) and Urban (2000-2001) recruiting committees, the Principles of Economics textbook search committee, the Public Economics and Urban/Regional educational policy committees, and as the Department of Economics captain for the 2000 State Charitable Contribution Program.

Jennifer Edwards

served on the committee to develop the Health Policy Track of the joint Ph.D. program in public policy, 2000; (with Karen Minyard) developed and piloted a new course, "Applying Research to Policymaking: Examples from Health Care Policy," Fall 2000; and served on the Economics search committee, Winter 2000.

Paul G. Farnham

served on the University Advisory Committee for the Freshmen Learning Communities and on several subcommittees. He reviewed proposals for the learning communities and helped develop policies for the program. He chaired the AYSPS Academic Program Committee, which reviews all issues pertaining to AYSPS academic programs; coordinated the AYSPS response for the University Freshmen Learning Communities Program; and served on the committee for developing the health policy concentration in the Joint Ph.D. in Public Policy. He served as departmental core course coordinator for MBA 8403, "Economics for Managers," in the MBA program of the Robinson College of Business; served as a Teaching Associate from the Economics Department for the Georgia State University Center for Teaching and Learning; served on the departmental health economics recruiting committee for the 1999 - 2000 academic year; and served as a member of the Ph.D. dissertation committee for Susan Snyder and chair of the committee for Mary O. (Femi) Alao.

Atef Ghobrial

served on the AYSPS Promotion and Tenure Committee; served on the PAUS Promotion and Tenure and Post-Tenure Review Committees; and served as coordinator of the Transportation Studies Program. He served on doctoral thesis Committees in the Department of Economics; accompanied four graduate students to the attend the Transportation Research Board Meeting in Washington D.C., January 2000; accompanied fourteen students on a field trip to Jacksonville in May 2000 in which students visited the Jacksonville Skyway Transit and the Port of Jacksonville and presentations were made by the Director of Marketing at CSX Railroads and a planner at ICF Kaiser Engineers, Inc.; and accompanied six students to attend the International Intermodal Expo. in Atlanta, Ga., May 2000.

Shiferaw Gurmu

organized and coordinated the Department of Economics' Applied Econometrics Workshop and coordinated departmental computer and technology activities. He served as member of the following committees: AYSPS Technology Committee, Departmental Summer Research Grant Review Committee, Committee Revising Summer Research Grant Document, and the AYSPS Academic Program Committee. He served as member of the dissertation committees for Jim Barnhart, Jill Gunderson, Generosa Kagaruki, Robert McNab, Wasseem Mina, and William Joey Smith.

Carol D. Hansen

represented AYSPS and PAUS on the university committee for West Africa and the Cote d'Ivoire; revised the HRD masters booklet for new and prospective students; developed two undergraduate HR course proposals; and chaired six Ph.D. committees. She chaired the successful prospectus defense for Howard Bailey, and chaired the successful comprehensive doctoral exams for Kim Magee.

Amy Helling

served as a member of the AYSPS Academic Programs Committee, the AYSPS Committee on Teaching Technology, the PAUS Computer Committee, and the ad hoc PAUS committee considering revisions to the MSUPS curriculum; and served as Departmental Web Coordinator.

Gary T. Henry

served as chair of the Department of Public Administration & Urban Studies Promotion and Tenure Committee.

Julie L. Hotchkiss

served as member of the University Senate, serving on the following subcommittees: Faculty Affairs (Benefits, Faculty Workload, Academic Services), Planning and Development, and Library; member of the University Strategic Plan Sub-committee; evaluator of internal Research Initiation Grant proposals; member of the college Web Oversight Committee; Departmental Web Coordinator; Ph.D. Job Placement Director for the Department of Economics; Library Acquisitions Liaison for the Department of Economics; member of the undergraduate program committee of the Department of Economics; undergraduate advisor for B.B.A. students majoring in economics; and member of the Department of Economics' econometrics & statistics and labor economics educational policy committees. She supervised the Ph.D. dissertation committee of Jill Marie Gunderson, and supervised the Masters Paper of Ludmila Rovba.

Bill Kahnweiler

served as Coordinator of Human Resources Programming in the PAUS Department. In this capacity he provided leadership and oversight of the Ph.D. program in Human Resource Development, the M.S. program in Human Resource Development, the Human Resource Specialization in the B.S. Urban Policy Studies program, and the forthcoming B.S. in Human Resource Policy and Development program; designed 2 new courses (PAUS 3211, The Career Development Process, and GSU 1010, Orientation to GSU); assisted in the development of the new major in Human Resource Policy and Development; and served on GSU's University Career Services Committee. He chaired the dissertation committees for Bryan Delong, Mary Langley, Thomas Myers, Margaret Thompson, William West, and Michael Workman. He served as a member of the dissertation committees for Jonathon Dawe and Francis Reese.

Bruce Kaufman

served as chair of the Labor Policy Committee for the Department of Economics; hosted an at home evening social event for GSU Economics Club; and served as a member of the dissertation committee of Jonathan Dawes.

Glenn Landers

served as Georgia Health Policy Center representative on the college Web Oversight Committee.

Susan Laury

served as manager of the Experimental Economics Lab and member of the Summer Course Release Procedures Revision Committee; managed and supervised the Iowa Electronic Market Lab; served as captain for the State Charitable Contributions Program; and served as member of the college Web Oversight Committee. She co-organized (with Laura Taylor) the Environmental and Experimental Economics Seminar Series; conducted in-class experiment for Laura Taylor in April, and assisted her in preparations in August; organized an AYSPS lunch to discuss NSF funding opportunities in August;and helped Peter Grigelis with an in-class experiment in August. She contributed a summary of the internship project for the AYSPS proposal for the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates program, September, 2000.

Gregory B. Lewis

directed the Georgia Institute of Technology-Georgia State University joint Ph.D. program in public policy and serves on its Admissions and Coordinating Committee. In the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies, he served on the faculty steering committee, the merit-increase committee, and the promotion and tenure committee. He served as a member of the University Senate, the Graduate Council, APACE, the Faculty Affairs Committee, the Faculty Benefits Subcommittee, the Faculty-Graduate Student Mentoring Subcommittee, and the E-Course Subcommittee.

Jorge Martinez-Vazquez

chaired the dissertation committee of James Murphy and Wasseem Mina.

Julia Melkers

is a member of the GSU-GA Tech Joint Ph.D. Program Coordinating Committee. She served as member of the dissertation committee for Laura Tucker.

Robert E. Moore

served as Chairperson of the State Charitable Contributions Campaign Program for the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies; served as Director of Masters Programs in Economics and as advisor to all Masters Degree seeking students in the Economics Department and in the Robinson College of Business with Economics concentrations; served as Chair of the Economics Department Faculty Recruitment Committee for 1998-2001; served as a member of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies Academic Program Committee; and served as a member of the following departmental committees: Graduate Program Committee, International Economics educational policy committee, and Development Economics educational policy committee. Harvey K. Newman

Lloyd G. Nigro

served as member of the Provost's Committee on Evaluation of Non-Academic University Units; served as Chair of the Aviation Program Faculty Position Search Committee; assisted the PAUS Chair in collecting and organizing information required for the MPA Re-accreditation Self Study for NASPAA; and served as Public Administration Faculty Participant of the Albany State University/GSU Collaboration on Water Management Policy Research and MPA Degree Specialization Planning Process.

Judith Ottoson

served as Chair of the AYSPS Health Policy Track committee.

M. Melinda Pitts

served as Director of the Graduate Teaching Assistant Program; Director of the Iowa Electronic Market program; member of the search committee for Poverty and Welfare positions in Economics; member of the Graduate committee; member of the Principles Textbook Committee; and member of the Committee for a Health Policy Concentration for the Joint Ph.D. program in Public Policy. She organized the Brown Bag lunch series "Tools for Teaching." She served as a member of the dissertation committee of Jill Gunderson and Mary 'Femi' Alao.

Theodore H. Poister

Felix Rioja

Bruce A. Seaman

Created and graded the Micro Theory sections as part of the Masters Comprehensive Exams in Economics. He served as member of the University-wide committee to evaluate Non-tenure Track Faculty Appointment Policies, as Chair of the Industrial Organization policy committee, as Chair of the Microtheory faculty position search committee, and as a member of the Non-Profit Organization position search committee. He served as the chair of the dissertation committee for Harold Ball and Jim Barnhart; as member of the dissertation committees for Femi Alao, Steve McGuire, Chris Geller, and Susan Snyder; as tentative member of dissertation committees for Michael Melnick and Piriya Pholphirul; and as outside reader for Jill Gunderson and Kathleen Thomas.

David L. Sjoquist

Greg Streib

He and Katherine Willoughby manage the PAUS internship program.

Laura Taylor

served as Chair of the Undergraduate Programs Committee, was a member of the Department of Economics Program Evaluation Committee, a member of the Faculty Affairs Committee, a member of the environmental economics educational policy committee, and a member of the Search Committee for Chair of the Department of Economics. She was the faculty advisor for all students earning a B.A. or a B.S., the faculty advisor to the Undergraduate Economics Club, and faculty advisor to Omicron Delta Epsilon, the national economics honor society. She served the university as a member of the University Senate, Academic Programs and Continuing Education subcommittee, Admissions and Standards subcommittee, and Information Systems and Technology subcommittee. She was a member of the Committee for Establishing a B.A. in Policy, 2000. She served as chair of the dissertation committee for Carol Robinson (Ph.D. degree completed August, 2000), chair of the Ph.D. dissertation committee for Peter Grigelis, and chair of the M.A. thesis committee for Marie Hutchinson.

John Clayton Thomas

served as a member of the Search Committee for the Vice-President of Finance and Administration; was invited to serve as the AYSPS representative on the Triennial Evaluation Committee for GSU President Carl Patton; and served as a member of the Undergraduate Council subcommittee of the University Senate.

Neven Valev

served on the Undergraduate Program Committee of the Department of Economics; chaired a committee to choose a new textbook for the Principles of Economics classes; served as chair of the Mater's Thesis committees of Olga Pavlova and Kathleen Mahoney; served as a member of the Ph.D. Thesis committee of Waseem Mina, and developed the new undergraduate class, The Global Economy.

David M. Van Slyke

served on the Nonprofit Advisory Committee of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies; served as the institutional representative at the APPAM National Conference Meetings on November 2, 2000 in Seattle, Wash.; led the NASPAA self-study review on section 5.0 "Faculty"; conducted Independent Study courses for three graduate students; and served as guest lecture on Coding and Qualitative Data Analysis for HHS 3500 Research Methods, April 17, 2000.

Mary Beth Walker

served as Graduate Coordinator for the Department of Economics, served as Chairman of the Committee to Evaluate the Dean of the AYSPS (3rd year review), served on the AYSPS Tenure and Promotion Committee, and served on the Search Committee for an economist in social policy. She served on the dissertation committees of M. Femi Alao, Kathleen Thomas, Barbara Edwards, Agnes Bielinska, Susan Snyder, William J. Smith, Chris Geller, and James Murphy.

Sally Wallace

served on the economics department search urban/regional and welfare/poverty search committee, headed the public finance committee of the department, and served on the University Senate, research and budget committees. She served as dissertation chair for Barbara Edwards and Agnes Beilwicz, and on the dissertation committees of Douglas Campbell, Robert McNab, Stephanie Zobay, and Baoyun Quio.

William L. Waugh, Jr.

William L. Waugh, Jr. served on the University Senate's Budget, Planning and Development Committee, the Information Systems and Technology Committee, the Student Discipline Committees, and the Task Force on Faculty Diversity. He served on the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies' Faculty Affairs Committee (1999-01) and on two post-tenure review committees for the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies.

Verna J. Willis

served as chair of the State Charitable Contributions Drive for the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies, creating a model solicitation letter that was distributed to other unit chairs in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. Verna J. Willis serves as advisor to undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students in HRD. She served as dissertation committee chair for Jonathan Dawe, Shara Fountain, Lucinda Gibson-Meyers, Mary Hooper, Cheryl Johnson, David Kialain, and Georgia Putnam; and served on the doctoral committees for Howard Bailey, M.
