Outreach is an essential part of the mission of the Andrew Young
School. Faculty, research associates and graduate students were heavily
involved in Georgia and in the Atlanta region, in all manner of ways.
We developed and implemented training programs, carried out applied research
projects, spoke at public and private meetings, worked directly with government
officials in evaluation of policy options, and served on boards of non-profit
agencies. We tried to help make better policy in our state, and believe
we added value in many areas. The following listing shows the very great
breadth of our state and community service.

out of the desire for numerous organizations to coordinate their efforts
at promoting "quality growth" approaches in the state. Among the purposes
of the GQGP is to collectively develop a quality growth tool kit to facilitate
local government implementation of innovative growth management approaches,
to share ideas and best practices, and to avoid duplicating efforts. The
Partnership was initiated by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs
(DCA) and the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) in March 2000, and has
since grown to more than thirty organizations.
, Dave Sjoquist and Sally
Wallace initiated development of a Georgia advisory commission on
intergovernmental relations to include representatives from municipal
and county governments as well as state agencies. This group will focus
on intergovernmental fiscal and policy issues.
coordinated a meeting of AYSPS faculty with the executive director and
director of sales and marketing of Georgia's Yamacraw project. Yamacraw
is the state's high tech initiative for the development of high bandwidth
computer operations and chip design.
participates as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for
the Georgia Rural Development Council which is chaired by Lt. Governor
Mark Taylor. The TAC consists of representatives from numerous state agencies,
universities, and economic development organizations. The TAC prepared
the "State of Rural Georgia" document, which was a benchmark report for
the initial work of the Council. That report included an economic vitality
index for all counties in Georgia. Current work includes a human capital
index for all counties which will be used in policy development for the
Council's 2002 agenda.
