Advancement - Development Highlights
at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies

Major Gifts

The Office of Development is thrilled to announce the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies has received a generous gift from Mr. R. Charles Loudermilk, Sr. As Chairman and CEO of Aaron Rents, Inc., influential businessman Mr. Loudermilk has worked for years to support his community. He received a degree from Georgia State University in 1948, and was inducted this year into the J. Mack Robinson College of Business Hall of Fame.

Because of his longstanding friendship with the Young family, Mr. Loudermilk has created the Jean Childs Young Fellowship to provide assistance to graduate students in public policy, with a special emphasis on education and children’s issues. In addition, thanks to Mr. Loudermilk, the Andrew Young School is creating the Jean Childs Young Lecture Series on education and/or child policy, to be hosted every other year.

The Andrew Young School of Policy Studies very much appreciates Mr. Loudermilk’s gift, and Ambassador Young is grateful that Jean Childs Young’s name will be permanently associated with the school.

The Andrew Young School of Policy Studies has received a charitable pledge from Mr. and Mrs. John and Jan Portman. The Portmans have long been friends of Georgia State University, and now are assisting the Andrew Young School in its mission to provide quality education to our students, with a gift to the scholarship fund.

The Andrew Young School is naming our executive conference room The John and Jan Portman Conference Room. This beautiful, state-of-the-art conference room is located in the Dean’s suite on the 6th floor of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies building, located in the heart of downtown at Five Points, on the Georgia State University campus.

We appreciate our donors' contributions and efforts on behalf of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. Ambassador Young is very pleased to welcome our donors as they sustain the fortitude of our students, our work, and our school. We are glad their names will be permanently associated with our mission.

Upcoming Events

In October 2006, the AYSPS will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a week of events highlighting our prestigious programs, culminating in a large celebration.

The AYSPS Office of Development is also engaged in building a donor wall to be displayed in the lobby of the building, honoring those who significantly contribute to the school.

The Faculty / Staff Annual Giving Campaign

Again in 2005, the faculty and staff of Georgia State University have shown their support for the University and its mission by giving back to the University. More than 79% of the university’s faculty and staff contributed to the Faculty Staff Campaign. The Andrew Young School had 77% of its faculty and staff contributing. This strong demonstration of commitment and approval are important as funding is sought from outside sources.

Percentage of Faculty and Staff Giving

  AYSPS 95.6% 90.1% 93.0% 77.0%

The State Charitable Giving Campaign

Each fall, Georgia State University participates in the State Charitable Giving Campaign. This campaign helps to fund a number of non-profit agencies that provide service to communities across the state of Georgia. Donors can select from a number of options for allocating their gifts. In 2004-05, the Andrew Young School exceeded 90% in staff and faculty giving to this important campaign. The 2005-06 campaign is still in progress, and the Andrew Young School expects to reach 90% participation again this year.

Friendraising in 2005

We continue to reach out to our alumni, donors, supporters and the community at large through a variety of mediums. The Briefing, our college newsletter, continues to be widely read and praised for its content and quality. Through The Briefing, we are reconnecting with alumni interested in The Andrew Young School and its growing reputation. Again this year, we hosted a number of special events, including the Coca-Cola Student Leadership Conference and the Nonprofit Roundtable. These events introduce our college and our programs to individuals throughout the community. The move into our new building also gave us the opportunity to bring alumni and other supporters in for tours and event receptions.

Corporate and Foundation Giving

In addition to alumni and faculty/staff support for our programs, we receive funding from the corporate community as well. Among these corporate donors are United Parcel Service, The Coca-Cola Company, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Bank of America and Northern Trust Bank.
