Leadership Support
The UPS Foundation makes grant to support Nonprofit Studies Program
The UPS Foundation recently made a grant of $100,000 to support scholarship in the Andrew Young School’s growing Nonprofit Studies Program. This support provides a tremendous boost to the program’s ability to recruit strong students and to expand its knowledge development and service work on behalf of the nonprofit sector.
The UPS Foundation, under the direction of long-time AYSPS board member Evern Cooper Epps, has been a steadfast supporter of the mission of the Andrew Young School and the Nonprofit Studies Program. The UPS Foundation pursues its initiatives by identifying specific projects where its support can help produce a measurable social impact.
“We are naturally thrilled to be the recipients of this support,” said Dennis Young, director of the Nonprofit Studies Program and the Ramsey Professor of Private Enterprise, “and we treasure our long standing relationship with The UPS Foundation.”
AYSPS Announces Rick Anderson Scholarship Program
The Andrew Young School has established the Rick Anderson Scholarship for City of Atlanta Employees. Rick Anderson donated funds for the establishment of the program. He received a B.S. in Urban Life and Urban Studies in 1971 and a master’s degree in Public Administration in 1974. Anderson had an association with the City of Atlanta for over 25 years, serving as budget director in the administration of Mayor Andrew Young, and retiring after serving as chief financial officer on two separate occasions.
Alumnus pushes to “poverty-proof” future generations, serves as guest lecturer
Alumnus Ralph Moor, Class of 1937, provided a gift to the Andrew Young School to develop a course in personal finance for undergraduates. The class, called “Credit Card Craze,” is offered during fall and spring semesters, and is currently in its fifth offering. Mr. Moor has attended one class each semester. He serves as guest lecturer to provide wisdom and advice to the younger generations. This semester, Mr. Moor will address the Undergraduate Economics Association at their regular meeting. More about Mr. Moor, as well as copies of his lecture, can be found online at http://aysps.gsu.edu/events/2006/moor.htm.
Administration
In November 2006, the Office of Development in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies appointed Bill Doerr as the new director of development. Bill has served in development positions at Guilford College, Andrew College, and Oglethorpe University, raising over $90 million in support of higher education initiatives. He has held a variety of leadership positions with the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and is an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.
The Faculty / Staff Annual Giving Campaign
Again in 2006, the faculty and staff of Georgia State University have
shown their support for the University and its mission by giving back
to the University. The Andrew Young School's faculty
and staff contributed over $13,000.
The State Charitable Giving Campaign
Each fall, Georgia State University participates in the State Charitable
Giving Campaign. This campaign helps to fund a number of non-profit agencies
that provide service to communities across the state of Georgia. Donors
can select from a number of options for allocating their gifts. In 2005,
the Andrew Young School exceeded 90% in staff and faculty giving to this
important campaign. The 2006 campaign had a 96% participation by AYSPS employees, helping Georgia State win the Governor's Cup for the second time.
Outreach in 2006
The college and development office continues is steadfast work in reaching out to friends of the Andrew Young School. An alumni club has been formalized and has begun taking on initiatives related to building goodwill and networks among graduates. We have also hosted a number of special events to increase notoriety in the greater Atlanta community. The Nonprofit Roundtable once again brought leaders from the third sector to our campus, and the Dan E. Sweat Chair in Education and Community Policy allowed us to hold a conference on the recent trends and future prospects of growth for the City of Atlanta.
Corporate and Foundation Giving
In addition to alumni and faculty/staff support for our programs, we
receive funding from the corporate community as well. Among these corporate
donors are United Parcel Service, The Coca-Cola Company, Coca-Cola Enterprises,
Bank of America and Northern Trust Bank.
