The
Applied Econometrics Workshop for the spring semester continues on Friday,
April 1, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. in the Smart Seminar Room 749/750 (7th floor
of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies Building, 14 Marietta Street,
NW).
The speaker will be Christopher J. Ruhm (right) of the
University of North Carolina - Greensboro.
He will present his work on "Maternal Employment and Adolescent
Development." His study investigates how maternal employment is related
to the outcomes of 10- and 11-year-olds after controlling for a wide variety
of child, mother and family background characteristics. The results suggest
that the mother's labor supply has deleterious effects on cognitive development,
obesity and possibly risky behaviors such as smoking or drinking, while
reducing behavior problems. His working paper can be accessed on the intranet
here,
and more information about Dr. Ruhm can be found on his homepage.
