at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies

A View from 5 Points: An Andrew Young School Dialogue on Global Policy

The Andrew Young School hosted a month-long series of events celebrating the school's new building during April 2005. Each photo on this page will link to a description and more photos of each event.

The month of April was an exciting time for the Andrew Young School. The Atlanta community joined with faculty, staff, and students to participate in informative and fun events in celebration of the School's new building, located in the heart of downtown Atlanta at Five Points.

April 1 brought Christopher J. Ruhm to present "Maternal Employment and Adolescent Development" as part of the Applied Econometrics Seminar Series.

The Andrew Young School of Policy Studies and The Usery Center inaugurated the W.J. Usery Distinguished Lecture Series on April 8, with invited lecturer Richard B. Freeman, who spoke on the future of "worker well-being." Freeman also chatted with students and faculty at a coffee and conversation event that morning. (Listen to the lecture -- starts at 30 sec. with an introduction by Dean Roy Bahl.)

On April 11, the Andrew Young School opened its doors to the public and provided tours of the new building, complete with historical perspectives and construction facts. Guests enjoyed a reception in the Vault, an underground student cyber lounge.

After the tours, the public was welcome to attend a lecture by Jay Mackie of the U.S. Treasury Department. Mackie presented "Tax Reform, Asset Values, and Transition Relief for Old Capital" as part of the Fiscal Research Center's Seminar Series.

Operation Hope and AYSPS hosted the April 12 forum "From Civil Rights to Silver Rights, the Dawning of a New Era in 21st Century America," which addressed the need for financial literacy throughout the country. Ambassador Andrew Young and Dean Roy Bahl were among the panelists and moderators that included Sect. Jack Kemp and Martin Luther King III.

Ambassador Andrew Young was honored April 13 with a commissioned portrait, hung in the lobby of the new building. Young's family joined faculty and staff for the celebration. Indonesian artist Machyar Gleuenta created the classic artwork and was present for the unveiling. The Drum Major Institute for Public Policy hosted a luncheon that afternoon to celebrate Ambassador Young.

The day wrapped up with a Symposium on a "World View: From Plains to the Planet," featuring President Jimmy Carter and Ambassador Andrew Young, moderated by Dean Bahl. The talk covered past events to the future of giving in front of over 400 people. (Order your DVD copy of the event here.)

April 14 was packed with events for everyone in the college. The Advisory Board met to hear updates on the School's progress, then the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies hosted a presentation by Don Kettl of the University of Pennsylvania on "The Next Government of the United States." The end of the day was yet another celebration, as students were honored for their academic achievements at the Ninth Annual Honors Day, a dinner and awards ceremony held at the Sheraton Hotel in Atlanta.

A reception honoring W.J. Usery was held April 15 in the Commerce Club, commemorating the establishment of the W.J. Usery Jr. Chair in Labor Studies, and the appointment of W.J. Usery as a Distinguished Executive Fellow in Labor Policy.

The Georgia Health Policy Center began a Child Policy Partnership between Georgia State University and the University of Georgia to improve the well-being of Georgia's children. Through the partnership, the schools aim to introduce a new way of looking at children's issues by linking research and practice, and facilitating discussions to strengthen both throughout the state. Richard Rothstein and Taifa Butler participated in the first of several discussions on April 20 with the panel on "Children's Issues and the Conditions that Put them at Risk."

Chris R. Bollinger from the University of Kentucky visited on April 22 to present his research on "Match Bias From Earnings Imputation in the Current Population Survey: The Case of Imperfect Matching," as part of the Applied Econometrics Workshop.

The Andrew Young School's calendar of events wrapped up on April 28 with the Fifth Annual Nonprofit Roundtable, featuring Invited Speaker Dennis Young.

Upcoming seminars and other school events are posted on the AYSPS Calendar.
