Portrait Unveiling honoring Andrew Young
at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies

Ambassador Andrew Young honored with commissioned portrait in new building.

Carolyn McClain Young, wife of Ambassador Andrew Young, asked family members to assist her in unveiling the new portrait in the Andrew Young School's lobby. Click here to watch the unveiling (25:17 min.)

The Honorable Andrew Young is a former U.N. Ambassador, U.S. Congressman, mayor of Atlanta, and longtime minister and civil-rights leader. He was instrumental in bringing the Olympics - and international recognition - to Atlanta. The Andrew Young School is continuing his efforts to inform and assist governments and the private sector to make better policy. Generations of students trained at this school will be a lasting part of the Andrew Young legacy.

Georgia State University named the School of Policy Studies as its sixth college in 1996. The School took the Andrew Young name in 1999 and dedicated itself to helping train those who would become leaders in designing and implementing policy. The school has only become more and more successful, and the opening of the new building offered the School an opportunity to honor Ambassador Young with a portrait in the lobby.

The Unveiling took place April 13 at noon, and was attended by faculty, staff, local dignitaries and citizens, and Ambassador Young's family and friends. Dean Roy Bahl warmly welcomed the attendees and introduced AYSPS Advisory Board Chair Paul Rosser. Rosser reflected on the accomplishments of Ambassador Young, painting a picture of the high regard felt by most about Young. He then offered the stage to AYSPS Advisory Board Member - and Young's wife - Carolyn McClain Young.

Mrs. McClain Young spoke for a moment about her husband, then invited the Ambassador's family to help her unveil the portrait, created by Indonesian artist Machyar Gleuenta.

Ambassador Young then invited the artist to join him on the stage while he spoke about the challenges facing the local and global communities. He noted that the Andrew Young School is training students to become leaders on the world stage, and he looks forward to the informed policy that will help all the countries change for the better.

The Andrew Young School hosted a month-long series of events celebrating the school's new building during April 2005. This event on April 13 honored Ambassador Andrew Young.
