GSU Alumnus Ralph Moor (class of 1937) holds a basic belief that the key to economic prosperity for all lies in a preventative measure—economic education. He knows that there is a better way to learn personal financial skills than by the school of hard knocks. Indeed, it is his dream that with a proper economic education, students could be “poverty-proofed” for life. Mr. Moor has encouraged the Economics Department at the AYSPS to put practical economics to work for its students. One of the outcomes of his efforts is the Freshman Learning Community Workshop, “Credit Card Craze,” given by Economics Professor Paula Stephan.
The Credit Card Craze workshop has been offered each fall for the last three years, and has reached over 1,500 students. Mr. Moor attended the final workshop for Fall 2006 on November 2, and introduced the session with one of his famous mini-lectures to students, reminding them that the laws of economics apply to all of us no less than do the laws of gravity. Professor Stephan credited Mr. Moor for his inspiration in designing the seminar, and thanked him for his willingness to share his financial wisdom with the newest generations. During this most recent visit to campus, Mr. Moor brought visionary developer James E. Cushman (below, far right), and stayed after the seminar to visit with Economics Chair James Alm, Professor Paula Stephan and Adjunct Professor Janet Johnson (from left).
