2007 UPS Lecture on Nonprofit Leadership, Governance and Economic Stewardship

The Nonprofit Studies Program was pleased to host the Second Annual UPS Lecture on Nonprofit Leadership, Governance and Economic Stewardship. This event took place on Thursday, October 25, 2007, from 3:00 to 4:30 pm, on the 7th floor of the AYSPS Building, 14 Marietta Street, NW, in Atlanta. The lecture was on "How Nonprofit Boards Really Work: Findings from the First National Representative Study."

Our distinguished speaker was Francie Ostrower, Senior Research Associate at the Urban Institute's Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy. Dr. Ostrower recently completed a study of nonprofit governance in the United States that included surveying over 5,100 participants. She discussed her findings, including relationships between public policy and governance, factors that promote or impede boards' performance of basic stewardship responsibilities, board composition and factors associated with board diversity, and recruitment processes, including the difficulty experienced by many nonprofits in finding members.

Graduate students also were invited to join Dr. Ostrower for a lively Coffee and Conversation before the lecture.

This annual lecture is sponsored by a generous grant from the UPS Foundation. The lectures are open to the public, and are especially targeted for nonprofit community leaders. If you have any questions about the annual lecture, or would like details about upcoming events, please e-mail nonprofitstudiesprogram@gsu.edu.
