Speaker Biography

Reynold Levy is president of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, a leading cultural organization comprised of 12 independent arts groups, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, New York Philharmonic, the Julliard School, and Lincoln Center Theatre. When Levy was selected for the post in 2002, the center was struggling to find a common vision of the future, including redevelopment of the nearly 50 year old facility. Levy’s ability to coalesce diverse board, funder, management, and public interests has led to successful revitalization of one of the country's most notable and complex cultural institutions. Under his leadership more than one billion dollars needed for redevelopment has been raised, and major renovation of the 16-acre campus is scheduled for completion by 2010.

Dr. Levy’s notable experience prior to leading the Lincoln Center includes 12 years as president of the AT&T Foundation, the last two of which were also spent as the senior officer for government relations for AT&T Inc. He also spent five years as president of the International Rescue Committee. He is known for taking the reins of the 92nd Street Y cultural center in 1977, after heading a task force to pull New York City out of a fiscal crisis.

A graduate of Hobart College, Dr. Levy also holds a law degree from Columbia University and a Ph.D in government and foreign affairs from the University of Virginia.   He has been a Senior Lecturer at The Harvard Business School, and has also taught law, political science and nonprofit administration at Columbia and New York Universities and at the City University of New York. His alma mater, Hobart College, recently honored him with its Alumni Medal of Excellence, awarded to only twenty graduates in the 125 year history of the school and the International Rescue Committee bestowed on him its coveted Freedom Award.

Dr. Levy authored the book, Give and Take: A Candid Account of Corporate Philanthropy, in 1999.  His latest book, Yours for the Asking: An Indispensable Guide to Fundraising and Management, has just been published.
