Now that you have chosen Public Administration/Public Policy as your degree/major, now what exactly do you want to do with this degree? Where do you want to work? What job opportunities are out there that match your ideas or career goals? Here are a few resources to help you answer these questions.
Individualized Career Counseling Services
It is extremely important for you to begin your career development process with learning more about who you are as an individual. Seeking career guidance from University Career Services, or from some of the resources outlined below, may help you to identify your values, your interests or your skills, your career options and information about them, and your decision making skills and styles and identifying any barriers to your career decision making.
Georgia State’s University Career Services (UCS) provides career counseling to all currently enrolled students. The PAUS department is pleased to have a school liaison in University Career Services. While students are certainly welcome to do a walk-in appointment and meet with any of the UCS career counselors, we encourage you to schedule an appointment ahead of time, so that you are assured of meeting with our liaison:
Phil Rockwell, M.S., NCC
Career Counselor
University Career Services
University Center, Room 270
Phone: (404) 413-1829
PAUS/PMAP alumni have two career counseling options available to them, depending on how distant you are from your graduation date. Alumni who graduated within the past year are welcome to utilize University Career Services (UCS), and request to meet with our liaison, Phil Rockwell (see contact information above). If your graduation date was more than one year ago, then you are eligible to utilize Georgia State’s Alumni Career Services, but you must be a member of the alumni association. To speak to someone in Alumni Career Services, please call (404) 413-1412.
PMAP Career Library
The PMAP department has a library of resources available for students to check out, read and learn more about careers in Public Policy and/or Public Administration. The career library is located in office 328 in the Department of Public Management and Policy.
PMAP Students & Alumni LinkedIn Network
Another option to consider when you are trying to focus in on a career field is to talk to alumni who have already tried those waters and can offer expert advice. The department sponsors the “PAUS/PMAP Students & Alumni LinkedIn” group on the LinkedIn networking site. To join this professional network, and begin reading the profiles of our many alumni and perhaps even some of your current peers in your program, click on this link (http://www.linkedin.com/groupInvitation?gid=160945) and begin networking today.
