The Department of Public Management and Policy is housed within the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies and known nationally for its research and teaching excellence, as well as service to public and nonprofit organizations. Its faculty consistently is ranked among the top programs nationally in terms of scholarly publications and applied research products. Its alumni hold responsible positions on all levels of government in the United States, in many nonprofit agencies, and in private sector organizations that work with governments and nonprofits. Students come from all over the United States and from other nations throughout the world.
The department offers degree programs designed to prepare students for professional, managerial, and leadership positions and careers in a wide variety of public and nonprofit agencies. Faculty engage in scholarly and applied research across a broad array of public management and policy areas that includes public budgeting and financial management, planning and economic development, nonprofit management, and policy analysis and evaluation.
As a unit of the Andrew Young School, the department is committed to community service with the goal of improving government, society, and quality of life in the Atlanta area, the Southeast region, and throughout the United States and other countries. The department is located in the Andrew Young School building located in the heart of downtown Atlanta only a few blocks from major city, county, state and federal offices, as well as nonprofit agencies and foundations.
The department currently accepts students in several programs:
- Bachelor of Science in Public Policy (BS-PUP)
- Minors in Nonprofit Leadership, Planning & Economic Development, and Public Policy
- Master of Public Administration (MPA) and MPA-JD
- Master of Public Policy (MPP)
- Graduate Certificates
- PhD in Public Policy
Within each of these degree programs, students are able to gain additional expertise by pursuing one or more of a number of concentrations. The location of the department also provides an ideal location for volunteer opportunities and internships that help students develop skills needed in a variety of public, nonprofit, and private agencies.
