- Goal statement: You should submit a short, typed statement that answers the following: What inspired you to pursue a degree and/or career in public service? Discuss any specific events, experiences (personal, academic, or professional), issue areas, or individuals that have influenced your decision. How do you envision using a degree from the Andrew Young School to achieve your professional goals?
- Official GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores (Optional): The GRE of the Educational Testing Service is optional. However, the GRE is strongly recommended for any applicant whose undergraduate grade-point-average (UGPA) is below 3.0. If submitting GRE scores, submit test scores in advance or at the same time of application submission. Official scores must be reported to institution code 5251. More information can be found at our Admissions FAQ page or, to schedule the test, at www.gre.org.
- TOEFL or IELTS Academic scores (International applicants only): Most international applicants are required to submit official TOEFL or IELTS Academic scores. Any applicant whose country of birth is an English-speaking country found on the exemption list is not subject to the English Proficiency requirement. Exemption list.
- Upload Transcripts from each post-secondary college/university attended. For students who have already earned a degree; if the title of the degree and graduation date (month and year) are not indicated on the transcript, separate proof of degree (e.g., an official copy of the diploma or degree certificate) must also be submitted along with the transcript:

You should submit a short, typed statement of personal and professional goals as they relate to this program. Statement of Purpose Guidelines***
In order for the School of Social Work to obtain a clear picture of who you are, why you have chosen to enter the social work profession, your readiness for graduate education, and what motivates you to apply to Georgia State University’s Master of Social Work program, we ask you to write a statement of purpose and submit it with your application. This statement, which is an important part of your overall application, should NOT include a detailed description of your entire life; it should briefly cover important experiences, interests, and abilities as they relate to your seeking professional training in the School of Social Work. You should use the following statements to discuss your personal background, career objectives and personal evaluation. The Statement of Purpose should be no more than six typed, double-spaced pages and answer the following questions.
- Understanding that there are many helping professions, we are interested in knowing why you want to be a social worker. Describe the factors that have led to your decision to enter the social work profession. Discuss life experiences, other people, or educational, employment or volunteer experiences that have contributed to your decision. Discuss your understanding of the social work profession.
- Having read the GSU School of Social Work’s mission statement and description of the MSW program, discuss how your particular interests fit with our MSW program.
- Discuss the personal qualities that equip you for the social work profession. Include any experiences in which you have exercised leadership, responsibility, and/or judgment. Discuss also what areas of your professional development you would like to strengthen.
- Discuss experiences you have had which make you believe that you can work effectively with people from diverse populations reflecting religious, racial, ethnic, handicapped status, socio-economic, gender, and sexual orientation differences.
- Discuss any extenuating circumstances which may have affected past academic performance.
ADVANCED STANDING APPLICANTS ARE ASKED TO ANSWER THE ABOVE QUESTIONS AND THE ONE BELOW.
- Having earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree, we would like for you to analyze a social work experience, using your practicum or employment (pick the most significant).

- Statement of Professional and Academic Goals: In two to three pages, address the following topics in an essay: academic goals, field(s) of interest, how GSU’s program will contribute to achieving these goals. Specifically, please address:
- Your career goals and main research interests and how these interests align with our faculty
- The relevant research, course work, and/or work experience that has prepared you to complete a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice and Criminology at Georgia State University
- How completing a Ph.D. In Criminal Justice and Criminology at Georgia State University help you achieve your long-term goals
- Challenges you have faced achieving your academic goals to date and how you overcame them
- Your strengths that have contributed to your research, academic, and/or work success
- Weaknesses or areas of growth that you want to address
- Your views of diversity and inclusion as goals in graduate education
- Academic Paper/Writing Sample: Single-authored writing sample that demonstrates the applicant’s writing ability. Examples include a chapter from the applicant’s thesis or a paper written for course credit. In general, the paper submitted should not be longer than 35 double-spaced pages.

- Personal/Goal Statement: Two to three page, typed statement of interest covering personal and professional goals as they relate to the Ph.D. in Economics, including desired area of specialization, research interests, and faculty with whom applicant would like to work. Statement should discuss your reasons for applying to the doctoral program, expectations for completion of the coursework and dissertation, and prospective employment. Include special circumstances, if any, or other information not covered in the application that you think would be helpful in evaluating your application.
- Resume/Curriculum Vitae: Provide a complete, current resume or curriculum vitae summarizing your academic, research, clinical, and/or other relevant experiences.

- Application fee: A nonrefundable fee of $50 is required for each application. This fee must be paid online by credit card.
- Personal/Goal Statement: Two to three page, typed statement of interest covering personal and professional goals as they relate to the Ph.D. in Public Policy, including desired area of specialization, research interests, and faculty with whom applicant would like to work. Statement should discuss your reasons for applying to the doctoral program, expectations for completion of the coursework and dissertation, and prospective employment. Include special circumstances, if any, or other information not covered in the application that you think would be helpful in evaluating your application.
- Biographical Statement: Two page Biographical Statement that includes biographical information and defines how you have prepared yourself for doctoral study. It may include schools attended, areas of study and formative experiences (particularly those that are relevant to pursuing a Ph.D.). This statement is intended to help the committee better know the applicant and to see why pursuing a doctoral program is the next logical step.
- Official GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores: Official scores must be reported to institution code 5251 and received by GA State by the application deadline. More information can be found at our Admissions FAQ page or, to schedule the test, at www.gre.org.
- TOEFL or IELTS Academic scores (International applicants only): Most international applicants are required to submit official TOEFL or IELTS Academic scores. Any applicant whose country of birth is an English-speaking country found on the exemption list is not subject to the English Proficiency requirement. Exemption list.
- Three letters of recommendation: All letters should be submitted through the online application.
- Upload Transcripts from each post-secondary college/university attended. For students who have already earned a degree; if the title of the degree and graduation date (month and year) are not indicated on the transcript, separate proof of degree (e.g., an official copy of the diploma or degree certificate) must also be submitted along with the transcript:
- Upload each transcript to the Academic History section of the online application before submitting your application -or- upload to your application status page under the Upload Materials section if your application has been submitted.

The graduate-level non-degree classification is provided in recognition of the fact that education is a lifelong process and that people may wish to enroll in one or more graduate courses at various times for personal or professional reasons without completing a degree program. Non-degree status is available for a maximum of two semester and applications to non-degree status are subject to the master/certificate deadlines.

Graduate transient status is reserved to students who are currently in a graduate program at a regionally accredited institution who wish to take a course or courses in the Andrew Young School while away from their home institution. This status is valid for only one semester.

This re-entry application should only be used for graduate students who wish to re-enter their program of study after a period of non-enrollment, alumni graduate students who wish to return and take courses for personal enrichment, and graduate students who are required to re-enter due to non compliance with the university’s continuous enrollment policy.
