Andrew Young School Selected to Pilot National Initiative to Expand Public Service Careers
August 2020 – Georgia State University is among the first three schools chosen to begin planning to become a Next Generation Public Service Academy.
NSF Grant Funds Novel Cybersecurity Training and Mentorship Program
July 2020 – The Evidence-Based Cybersecurity Research Group (EBCS) received nearly $300,000 for a mentorship program teaching students advanced research skills.

February 2020 – The Andrew Young School co-hosts the second “Data Science for Public Service” meetup with the Atlanta Regional Commission, which includes a presentation by Sarah Lageson of Rutgers University on Locating the Individual in Big Data.

January 2020 – The Andrew Young School co-hosts the first “Data Science for Public Service” meetup with the Atlanta Regional Commission, at which data scientists from state, federal and regional public offices gathered with Andrew Young School faculty and staff to discuss best practices in data visualization.
Georgia State is Selected to Join the Public Interest Technology University Network
January 2020 -Georgia State University, led by the Andrew Young School, has been named to the Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN), a partnership of prestigious colleges and universities that fosters collaboration among those committed to building the emerging field of public interest technology and growing a new generation of civic-minded technologists.
Co-Hosted “Computing The Public Interest`` Workshop
January 2020 – The Andrew Young School co-hosts the “Computing the Public Interest” workshop with Georgia Tech, at which computing researchers from Georgia Tech launched a year-long collaboration with AYSPS researchers to examine issues of historic inequity in the southeast region.
Hosted “The Future is Open`` Workshop
December 2019 – The Andrew Young School hosts “The Future is Open Workshop,” at which speaker Jeff Gallant discusses how to relieve the burden of textbook costs on students. Gallant is program director for Affordable Learning Georgia, a program of the Board of Regents, University System of Georgia.

November 2019 – Maggie Reeves and Robert McMillan presented their paper, “Secure Shouldn’t Mean Secret: A Call for Public Policy Schools to Share, Support, and Teach Data Stewardship,” at the 2019 NASPAA Annual Conference.
Awarded the Textbook Transformation Grant by the Affordable Learning Georgia program
November 2019 – The Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology receives a $30,000 Textbook Transformation Grant from the University System of Georgia’s Affordable Learning Georgia program. It will be used to reduce textbook costs to zero in criminal justice and criminology courses in support of the AYS Open strategic priority.
Awarded the Network Challenge grant by The Public Interest Technology University Network
October 2019 – Georgia Tech computer scientists are partnering with AYS social scientists to develop interdisciplinary projects addressing historic and continued equity challenges in the Southeastern U.S. The Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN) funds the partnership with a $180,000 grant supported through its inaugural “Network Challenge.”

Digital Textbook Initiative launched with GSU Libraries
September 2019 – AYS Open begins working with GSU Library to identify and purchase digital textbooks. This work will save students up to $130,000 per semester. Sept. 2019

Hosted first Data Science for Public Service (DS4PS) Workshop
August 2019 – Junior faculty in public affairs, nonprofits and computing gathered at Georgia State University for the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies’ first Data Science for Public Service (DS4PS) Workshop. Participants convened to develop strategies to advance data science practices in the nonprofit and public sectors around the country.
Policy Analytics
We will advance the field of policy analytics through the research we conduct and the courses and credentials we offer.
We will identify the varying effects of new technology on marginalized groups, and anticipate future technology driven disparities to devise more inclusive interventions and policies.
We will develop and operate AYS Open, an open access philosophy geared toward increasing the benefit and reducing the cost oknowledge generation and dissemination and use.
