Google Trends and Mass Shootings
Post-doctoral research associate, Rodrigo Aranda Balcazar, describes how he uses Google Trends to measure the public’s behavioral and mental health changes after tragic events like mass shootings. He’ll share ways that Google Trends data can be used to measure what people are searching on Google platforms by topic, location, and time. Rodrigo works for the Georgia Policy Labs, an Andrew Young School research center that uses data and science to find evidence-based solutions that efficiently and effectively address the needs of children and families.

Mobile Connectivity & Broadband Infrastructure
Doctoral student, Luisa Nazareno, describes how data from mobile devices is changing our understanding of how people are connecting to the internet via cell phones and wifi access points during the pandemic. She’ll share preliminary analyses of data from a company that logs anonymized records of users’ mobile device location to visualize internet infrastructure. Luisa is a fellow of the Public Interest Technology University Network.

Doctoral student, Robert Perkins, explains the techniques used by the Evidence-Based Cyber Security Research Group, such as monitoring criminal activity on the dark web to develop strategies for disrupting their activities. Doctoral student, Austin Harrison, explains how to scrape data from city data portals to examine how people are displaced in the context of neighborhood change, housing policy, economic development and shrinking cities. Learn about his research with the Urban Studies Institute examining revitalizing neighborhoods and the development of quality affordable housing.
