Economics, BA/MA Dual Degree
This dual degree program, allowing completion of both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in approximately 5 years, is available to undergraduates majoring in economics who have completed at least 30 hours of academic credit and who have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3. Students may apply to this program at any time after completing 30 hours but prior to completing 90 hours of undergraduate coursework.
Students that qualify and are admitted to the dual degree program can commence taking coursework toward the master’s degree program while still completing their bachelor’s coursework. Formal admission to the graduate program occurs in the final year and is contingent upon successful completion of the bachelor’s degree, on maintaining the required grade-point average, and on performance in the graduate-level courses taken during the bachelor’s degree.
General process for admitting students to dual program:
- Undergraduate students majoring in economics who have earned at least 30 hours of academic credit and have no more than 90 hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 are eligible to apply to the dual degree program.
- In addition to the 3.3 GPA, students should:
- Complete the BS/MA, BA/MA, or IEML/MA pre-application form. This will be kept on file in the Department of Economics and in the Office of Academic Assistance in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.
- 2 letters of recommendation (academic or professional).
- Personal statement of goals.

Graduates from the MA in economics program acquire analytical skills and data skills that qualify them to work on a variety of positions. Past graduates have taken positions as economists, researchers, analysts in:
a) Policy institutions at the federal, state or local levels in areas related to research, policy making and evaluation, etc. (for example at the The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the Centers for Disease Control, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, GA Department of Human Services, Atlanta Public Schools).
b) The business sector in areas related to finance, banking, consulting, insurance, etc. (examples, Deloitte, Bank of America, Informa, etc.).

The curriculum follows the standard programs of study of the bachelor’s and master’s in economics program. Graduate courses can satisfy areas in both the bachelor’s program of study and the MA program of study. Admitted students will consult with the Director of the MA in economics program to determine which graduate course to sign up for depending on the semester.
