Ph.D. Economics Program of Study (PoS) - Fall 2021 or Later
This PoS is designated for Ph.D. Economics students admitted to the degree program in 2021 or later.

Instructions
Complete and sign the PoS request form below listing when and what grades were received for each class.
- Use your Georgia State University student email address.
- Before enrolling in any course(s) planned to be used in sections C (Applied Economics), D (Elective Field), E (Elective Field), or an alternative to section B’s ECON 8030, they must receive Program Director approval by submitting a new PoS.
- In sections C, D, and E, provide the Course Prefix, Course #, and Course Name for each requested class.
- If you have selected a few or no courses in any of these sections (C, D, E), you may leave undecided course row(s) blank.
- Submit an updated PoS form when you have decided or wish to update/change approved class(es).
PoS Form Criteria
- Course Prefix, Course #, Course Name: List the course prefix, #, and name reflected in PAWS or Georgia State University graduate catalog.
- If requesting course substitution, cross-registration, or transfer credit class(es), see their bullet points below.
- Term & Year: Enter the term and year when you have taken or plan to take each course.
- If the course’s term has not been determined, in the Term column, select TBD and leave the Year column blank.
- Grade: Enter course grade.
- If the course’s grade has not been determined or in-progress, select TBD.
- No more than six credit-hours of coursework with a grade of “C” or “C+” may be counted toward the degree.
- A grade of “C-” or below cannot be counted towards degree requirements.
- Section B, ECON 8030 Alternative*: If you have received Program Director approval for an alternative ECON 8030 class, change ECON 8030’s row with the approved Course’s Prefix, #, and Name.
- Cross-Registration: If requesting to apply cross-registered course(s), enter Course Prefix, Course #, and Course Name as listed at the cross-registered institution.
- Notes Column: Enter the institution’s full name where the class was or will be taken.

- Transfer Credits: If requesting to apply approved transfer course(s), enter Course Prefix, Course #, and Course Name as listed at the transfer credit’s institution.
- Notes Column: Enter the institution’s full name where the class was or will be taken.
- Transfer credits are approved courses taken outside of Georgia State University and not cross-registered.
- Transfer courses must be approved prior to submitting or updating your PoS.
- To request transfer credit approval, submit the Graduate Transfer of Credit Request Form.

- Course Substitution(s): Add approved substitution course to the required class’ Notes column; must list course’s {Course Prefix} {Course #} {Course Name}.
- If requesting a course substitution for any required course(s) in sections A (Economic Theory and History) or B (Mathematical and Statistical Tools), notify and receive your Program Director’s approval prior to submitting the PoS form.
PoS & Program Requirements
A PoS is required as part of the Ph.D. Economics program’s requirements.
- The student’s doctoral coordinator must approve a PoS indicating how the student will fulfill each of the degree requirements by the end of the first semester of enrollment.
- This program of study becomes part of the student’s file; it may be revised, as appropriate, but must be kept current, as it will be a key factor in determining satisfactory progress in the program.
- Fifty-four semester hours of coursework, beyond the baccalaureate degree, as a minimum, must be successfully completed for graduation.
- When feasible, registration in 15 hours per semester is encouraged; at a minimum, students must register for nine hours per semester (excluding summer session).
- The following courses may not be used for degree credit toward the Ph.D. in Economics*:

- ECON 8180
- ECON 8220
- ECON 8230
- ECON 8300
- ECON 8320
- ECON 8850
- ECON 8860
- ECON 9515
- ECON 9540
- ECON 9780
*Exceptions may be granted by the doctoral coordinator. All programs of studies are subject to final approval by the doctoral coordinator.
- When a PoS is approved, the approved curriculum will be reflected in the student’s academic evaluation (located in PAWS).
