- Biography
Dr. Attell is a health services researcher who utilizes large administrative databases to answer real-world public health and public policy questions. He brings to his research more than a decade of applied experience collaborating with state and federal government partners to understand and improve health outcomes for a variety of communities. He particularly enjoys complementing and leveraging his background in medical sociology to bring social science insights to understand challenging and complex public health issues. At the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, Dr. Attell holds a joint appointment to the Georgia Health Policy Center and the School of Social Work.
Dr. Attell’s current research portfolio spans more than six million dollars in external funding, mainly from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He is the principal investigator of a national evaluation to implement and scale the CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program using a multisectoral health care collaborative. With support from the CDC, he is also the co-principal investigator of the Georgia Sickle Cell Data Collection Program (SCDC). The SCDC program utilizes integrated administrative data from a variety of sources to conduct population-based surveillance for sickle cell disease, a rare blood disorder.
Dr. Attell’s research has been disseminated widely, appearing in top journals such as JAMA Health Forum and JAMA Pediatrics. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Evaluation & the Health Professions and Health Services Insights and is the deputy editor of the Journal of Public and Professional Sociology.
