Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management and Social Enterprise

The certificate program in Nonprofit Management and Social Enterprise has two focuses. First, it will cover the skills in management, economic decision-making, marketing, fundraising and financial management that graduates can use (but which they are unlikely to get on the job) in any part of the nonprofit sector: social service provision, education, health, the arts, the environment, international relief or religion. Second, while most nonprofit management certificates have an exclusively practitioner focus, the Andrew Young School program will prepare students interested in pursuing nonprofit studies in graduate programs in public administration, policy analysis or economics.

This certificate will serve two main groups of professionals: those in the nonprofit sector who want to acquire new skills or need a credential to advance professionally, and those outside the sector wishing to enter.

A completed application includes the following materials submitted online. Do not submit paper copies:

  1. Submitted Online Application. Online applications must be submitted by the deadline. Paper applications are not available.
  2. Application Fee:  A nonrefundable fee of $50 is required for each application. This fee must be paid online by credit card.
  3. Goal Statement: The goal statement is your means of presenting yourself to the Graduate Admissions Committee. You should submit a short, typed statement that answers the following:
    • What inspired you to pursue a degree and/or career in public service? Discuss any specific events, experiences (personal, academic, or professional), issue areas, or individuals that have influenced your decision.
    • How do you envision using a degree from the Andrew Young School to achieve your professional goals?
  4. Official GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores (Optional): The GRE of the Educational Testing Service is optional. However, the GRE is strongly recommended for any applicant whose undergraduate grade-point-average (UGPA) is below 3.0. If submitting GRE scores, official scores must be reported to institution code 5251 and received by GA State by the application deadline. More information can be found at our Admissions FAQ page or, to schedule the test, at www.gre.org.
  5. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) Academic scores (International applicants only): International applicants are required to submit official TOEFL or IELTS academic scores.
  6. Upload Transcripts from each Post-secondary College/University Attended:
    • Upload each transcript to the Academic History section of the online application before submitting your application or upload to your application status page under the Upload Materials section if your application has been submitted.
    • Review requirements for submitting transcripts here.
    • Failure to follow these requirements will delay your application processing.

The certificate is composed of 12 credit hours of courses, including:

This certificate serves the needs of several different groups of professionals:

  • Those already in the nonprofit sector who seek to improve skills in areas not addressed in on-the-job training, such as strategic management, leadership and managerial economics.
  • Those who are moving from government or the private sector into nonprofit organizations and need the skills and credentials appropriate for such a switch.
  • Those who are pursuing non-Andrew Young School graduate degrees, but who desire training in nonprofit management skills.

Description

Careers

Many professionals in the nonprofit sector, also known as the Third Sector, seek to improve their skills in ways not available through on-the-job training, such as those in strategic management, leadership theories and managerial economics.

As the nonprofit sector professionalizes, there is increasing demand from employees in the sector for a credential that lies between in-house training programs and actual academic degrees.

The Third Sector’s rise in importance in local and national economies is indicative of a movement of labor out of government and the private sector and in to nonprofit organizations. Sector-changing employees provide a constant source of demand for the skills and credentials appropriate for such a switch.
