Philosophy, Politics and Economics, B.I.S.

The Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) program helps students become familiar with and capable of contributing to ongoing debates about the nature of good political and economic institutions, as well as the policies and practices that are best suited for creating and sustaining them. Students will develop the intellectual skills of the social scientist, who seeks to understand how the social world operates, and the moral philosopher, who seeks to critically evaluate the social world in relation to how it ought to be.

This interdisciplinary program makes use of the analytically rigorous tools of its three disciplines to promote serious thought about practical issues, allowing students to delve deep into moral, social, political and economic issues.

PPE graduates contribute intelligently to public dialogue, many in positions of power in government and corporate life. The PPE program supports the Civil Discourse Forum, a student group that encourages discussion of controversial issues and is often led by PPE students.

Program Details

If you’re a senior in high school or if you graduated from high school within the last two years, you’ll apply to begin your bachelor’s degree program using Georgia State’s Common Application. Find out more about applying.

International students: International applicants are those students who are in the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa (B-1, H-1, J-1, etc.), students who are living outside the U.S. and who will require an F-1 visa to study in the United States, students who are in the process of applying for Permanent Residency status, but have not yet received the Permanent Residency card or students who have been educated outside the U.S. Learn more about the application process.

Transfer students: If you’re already in college but need a change, transferring to Georgia State can provide you with the opportunities you need to succeed — in school and after graduation. View the details.

The program prepares students for careers and graduate programs that require independent thought with significant analytic and critical reasoning as well as writing ability.

See the Undergraduate Catalog for a detailed schedule of required courses for the major.

In addition to the program degree requirements, students must fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences degree requirements (see section 3030) and the university degree requirements (see section 1400).

Georgia State tuition information can be found at Student Financial Services.

Description

Historically, Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) were deeply connected. The father of modern economics, Adam Smith, was a philosopher concerned with moral and political philosophy. PPE as a contemporary academic field of study began at Oxford University in 1920 and has spread across the English-speaking world.
