The Program
Broaden your international perspective at one of the top-ranked universities in the Middle East and immerse yourself in Turkish language and culture. The Mevlana Exchange Programme, which is funded by the Turkish Council of Higher Education, aims to encourage exchange of students for the purpose of cross-cultural awareness and bilateral and regional understanding. Enhance your resume through one or two full semesters abroad in a dynamic world economy.
The program has a one-semester or two-semester duration, and occurs in the fall or spring. Participants will travel to Marmara University, where they will take courses in the School of Economics and will reap the benefits of living and learning in a new cultural setting. Participation permits Georgia State students to establish a collegiate relationship with the faculty and students at Marmara University, some of whom will travel to Georgia State the following term.
Location
Marmara University is located in Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul. Istanbul is Turkey’s most populous city as well as its cultural and financial hub. Located on both sides of the Bosphorus, the narrow strait between the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea, Istanbul bridges Asia and Europe both physically and culturally. Istanbul’s population is estimated to be between 12 and 19 million people, making it also one of the largest cities in Europe and the world.
The University is urban in nature and larger in size than Georgia State University. The University has fifteen campuses that are scattered throughout the cosmopolitan city of Istanbul; a city full of culture, shopping, food, and life! It is a wonderful place to be a student!
Eligibility
Language of Instruction: English
Minimum Required Undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or Graduate GPA of 3.0
Must be at least a second-year undergraduate student or second semester graduate student
Program size is limited and participation is contingent upon acceptance by the Program Director.
Courses and Credit
Students will enroll in economics and finance courses conducted in English. Students will take a normal load of classes appropriate to full-time status (12 US credits each semester for undergraduate students, 9 US credits for graduate students). Courses previously taken at GSU cannot be repeated at Marmara University.
Students from other institutions should follow their institution’s regulations concerning transfer credits.
Cost & Financial Aid
Georgia State University students participating in the exchange program pay standard GSU tuition for the semester spent abroad. The tuition paid for this program is at the in–state tuition rate, regardless of the student’s state of permanent residence.
Students are responsible for the payment of their travel, accommodation, and food expenses while abroad.
Financial aid is available to help fund this study abroad program. Students are highly encouraged to apply for the Georgia State University International Education Fee (IEF) Study Abroad Scholarship Program. Students wishing to apply must complete the program application on the GSU Study Abroad website: http://www.studyabroad.gsu.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.SimpleSearch. Note: Applications are due August 2015 for the 2015-2016 school year.
Responsibility & Liability
Participants in the program must have proof of current health and accident insurance that is valid abroad. Students must also submit any health documentation required by Marmara University. Students are also required to meet any European Visa requirements.
Students will be required to sign a Waiver of Liability/Indemnification Form in order to participate in the exchange program.
